Though it bills itself as "The Advanced Submarine Simulator," Up
Periscope is actually simple compared to many other sub sims. It features a
display that can be tiled so that the player may keep an eye on the
periscope while also managing another aspect of the sub's operation. There
are several scenarios in the game, and a variety of settings enable the
player to vary the experience a great deal. Though it offers both radar and
sonar, along with some other nice touches that might have set it apart from
its contemporaries, the actual feel of this game is not as entertaining or
challenging as many of the sub sims to hit the market in subsequent years.
Ultimately, a player may wind up simply sinking vast merchant fleets instead
of engaging in more thrilling activities such as combat with hostile subs.
Up Periscope is noteworthy because it demonstrates how much can be
accploished with a remarkably small amount of actual game data, but it is
not likely to prove as enjoyable as more sophisticated sub simulations.
