n00b its England that has brought in the ban. Scotland already has it...

It's bad it's wrong and the pubs are going to go bankrupt!
Ireland introduced a ban a couple of years ago and now 3/4 of the pubs are closed or closing.
This has been slowly replicated in scotland who introduced the ban before us.

All the major breweries have announced that profits will be down, many ppl will probably quit which arguably is only a good thing, but what about the loss of duty/tax i'm sure this gov't will think up a way of getting more tax out of us.

[QUOTE=Munky]for UK users of this website, the smoking ban came into effect at 6am this morning! whats everyones thoughts upon this? for people who are not in the UK and have no idea what I'm talking about, the UK has banned smoking from public places...
the only place you can smoke now were its legal, is outside, in your car or in your house. you cannot smoking in public buildings any longer..

is this a good thing? or a bad thing?

the pub over here is a traditional past time, now if you wana smoke, you need to either go into the designated smoking area (only 20% of places have one) or stand outside in the cold rain...

A ban on smoking man that is interesting and it happened at England so if your in that country you can't smoke at public places well what would be the penalty for smoking within a public location.

I think its a 50-100 ($100-$200 fine for you and 500 ($1,000) for the owner of the establishment you are caught smoking in..

also, if you have a member of the council (government type guy) who is visiting  your house, your not allowed to smoke for a minimum of an hour before his visit and you have to open all windows and air the house out..

its ridicules

It is...my country is going to introduce the no-smoking thing too, and even though I don't smoke I find this terribly ridiculous. Many of my friends smoke and I have no problem with that, and I just can't imagine a bar or club without some smoke here and there...It's just crazy. If they ban smoking they should ban cars too, because cars pollute the air a million times more than a group of smokers.

but that health system will be crippled by so many people giving up, less smokers = less tax to pay for  it.

The fine is 50 ($100)

If a person allows a public place to be smoked in (i.e. a landlord/shopkeeper) they face a fine of up to 5000 ($10,000) or 6 months in clink.

Wow that is really severe man you basically can't smoke at all so I might as well enjoy some of the freedoms that I have here since in America you practically could smoke where ever you want except for places that don't allow it. I feel sorry for you guys since now smoking is banned in England so its like if want to go over to a friends house and smoke a joint you can't really do it unless your in your car and you have to have the windows rolled up but anywhere beyond that its impossible.

Hey first let me say I value all of your opinions. I went out into town tonight and I found personaly that the atnosphere of a smoke free pub seemed much better and people seemed happier in general. Now let me start on smoking in general. How great are you! yeah you who's reading this! with a simple unconcious thought you can move, in a micro second without even realising it you have just controled over 20 muscles just to move your hand. you have sent thousands of electrical impulses around your body.. all to do something that you consider SIMPLE. Ever looked at a scenic view and thought how beutiful is that! well guess what it doesnt even compare to you. What else in the universe has literally LIMITLESS potential. I see it as for someone to willingly poison their body with cigarettes you simply cant realise how great you are. Above all of gods creations.... the heavens, angels, the universe, all teh planets and stars along with everything on them he created you. Your pure majesty and full potential puts you above everything else.

The ban only covers public places, Bars, clubs, shops etc

i.e. smoking in your own/friends home and car is fine.

Personally, I think it should be the landlords choice as to whether a pub or club is smoking or not.
